Garbage patches are large areas in the ocean where litter and other debris collects. These “collections” are formed by rotating ocean currents that are called gyres. The gyres pull debris into one location, often the centre of the gyre and form patches.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world. It is located between Hawaii and California and is considered to have the largest accumulation of miicroplastics in the world. Learn more in the video below.
